Course Description
This course attempts eqipping builders ability to study cities in a multi-sensory approach. People’s perception of urban space is influenced by many different factors, including the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste), the broader spatial-historical context and certain memories. Within the field of urban studies, the sensory landscape of a city is also referred to as the urban ‘sensescape’. Each city has its own, distinctive sensescape. Sensescapes have symbolic meaning and often generate a sense of belonging among people. In view of the hyper-diverse populations of many cities, this sense of belonging might vary strongly between individuals and groups. Therefore, examining the city through different sensory lenses offers new and exciting ways to understand how people live in, respond to, and imagine their cities.
This course also studies differnet urban processes and how various urban interventions through planning and design shape the forms of cities and lives of their inhabitants. The course will introduce students to the fundamentals of spatial planning as well as various methods of data collection, including site documentation and cultural landscape mapping. The lectures and assignments are designed to allow builders to grasp not only the basic concepts and techniques of planning and urban design, but also to develop a sustained awareness of the historical, cultural, economic and political forces that shape urban forms and social milieus.
